  Sir George Sweeney was knighted for his unstinting work in the field of Further Education. He was appointed to his present post in January 1990 following the merger of two colleges to form Knowsley Community College. Married with two daughters, he was awarded a Knighthood in 2000 Queen's Birthday Honours.
